EXPLORE PORTLAND & BEYOND

There’s more to finding a home than finding the right house.

One of the things I love about living and working in Oregon is how much there is to experience—from Portland’s neighborhoods, restaurants and local events to waterfalls, wineries, mountains and beautiful places to explore just a short drive away.

Whether you’re new to the area, considering a move, or already lucky enough to call Oregon home, I’ve put together some of my favorite places and resources to help you explore.

EAT & DRINK

From neighborhood favorites and food carts to waterfront dining, wineries and cozy spots worth discovering, there is always somewhere new to try. Here are a few places and resources to get you started.

DATE NIGHT & COCKTAILS

Dinner, drinks and a little Portland atmosphere—these are some great places to start when you're looking for a fun night out.

  • Bible Club PDX — A hidden speakeasy-style favorite in Sellwood with vintage décor and creative cocktails.

BRUNCH & BREAKFAST

Portland takes brunch seriously—these are a few favorites for a leisurely morning, a great Bloody Mary, or a breakfast worth getting out of bed for.

FOOD CARTS & CASUAL FAVORITES

One of the best ways to experience Portland is through its famous food-cart scene. Grab something delicious, find a seat and enjoy a casual taste of the city.

  • Hawthorne Asylum — A fun Southeast Portland pod with lots of different cuisines, communal seating and plenty of Portland personality.
  • CARTOPIA FOOD CARTS — A longtime Hawthorne favorite with fire-pit vibes, casual eats and a classic Portland food-cart experience.
  • WonderLove — Food carts, a full bar and a rooftop patio make this one especially fun for groups and a casual night out.

GET OUTDOORS

One of my favorite things about the Portland area is how easy it is to trade city streets for forests, rivers, waterfalls and mountain views. Whether you want an easy afternoon walk or a full day of adventure, Oregon makes it easy to get outside.

  • Forest Park — More than 5,000 acres of forest and 80+ miles of trails, all within Portland. It’s an amazing way to feel like you’ve escaped the city without actually leaving it.
  • Multnomah Falls — Oregon’s iconic 620-foot waterfall and a beautiful introduction to the Columbia River Gorge. Perfect for visitors, sightseeing and waterfall adventures.
  • Powell Butte Nature Park — A wonderful East Portland option with trails, open meadows and expansive Cascade views. This one is especially relevant to the east side of the metro.
  • Mt. Hood & the Columbia River Gorge — Mountains, waterfalls, scenic drives, hiking, skiing and charming small towns make this an easy escape from Portland in almost any season.

Oregon Coast day trip

DAY TRIPS
  • Cannon Beach & the Oregon Coast — Walk the beach beneath iconic Haystack Rock, explore the shops and restaurants in Cannon Beach, and take in some of the most beautiful coastal scenery in Oregon.
  • Hood River — A charming Columbia River town about an hour from Portland with great restaurants, breweries, wineries, shops, waterfront activities and the beautiful Hood River Fruit Loop. The official visitor bureau describes it as about an hour from Portland.
  • Willamette Valley Wine Country — Spend the day among rolling vineyards, tasting rooms, farm-to-table restaurants and charming towns such as Newberg, Dundee and McMinnville. The valley has hundreds of wineries and tasting rooms to explore.
  • Silver Falls State Park — A spectacular waterfall-filled escape near Silverton, famous for the Trail of Ten Falls and the opportunity to actually walk behind several waterfalls.

LOCAL FAVORITES

Sometimes the best way to get to know a city is simply to spend a Saturday wandering, shopping local and enjoying the places that give each neighborhood its personality. These are a few Portland experiences worth adding to your list.

  • Portland Saturday Market — Browse handmade art, jewelry, clothing, food and gifts from local makers along Portland’s waterfront. It’s been a Portland tradition since 1974.
  • Portland Farmers Market at PSU — A wonderful Saturday-morning tradition under the trees at Portland State University, with local produce, flowers, baked goods and prepared foods. It runs year-round and can have around 100 vendors during the main season.
  • Powell's City of Books — Portland’s iconic block-sized independent bookstore. Even if you aren't looking for a particular book, it's one of those places that's just fun to wander through.
  • Explore Portland’s Neighborhoods — Spend an afternoon discovering places like Alberta Arts District, Hawthorne, Sellwood-Moreland, Mississippi Avenue and the Pearl District. Each has a completely different personality.

PORTLAND AFTER DARK & CLASSIC DIVE BARS

Portland knows how to do nightlife a little differently. Along with great restaurants and cocktail lounges, the city is full of quirky neighborhood bars, old-school dives and wonderfully weird places that are part of what makes Portland, Portland. We love discovering these local spots — and Creepy’s is one of our personal favorites.

  • Creepy’s — One of our favorite Portland dive bars! This wonderfully weird spot in Portland’s Central Eastside is packed with offbeat decor, plenty of personality, cocktails and burgers. It’s exactly the kind of uniquely Portland place we love going back to.
  • Reel M Inn — A beloved Southeast Portland institution known for its no-frills atmosphere, pool table, fried chicken and famous jojos.
  • Sandy Hut — An old-school Portland classic dating back to 1923, with retro character, wood-paneled walls and a wonderfully unpolished neighborhood-bar feel.
  • Slammer Tavern — A colorful Buckman neighborhood favorite known for its year-round Christmas lights, casual atmosphere and classic Portland dive-bar personality.

SPORTS, CONCERTS & LIVE EVENTS

Portland may be known for its food, scenery and neighborhoods, but this city also loves a good event. From Trail Blazers basketball and major concerts to outdoor summer music and neighborhood festivals, there’s almost always something happening. Some of my favorite Portland memories have been made with family and friends at games, concerts and outdoor events around the city.

  • Portland Trail Blazers & Moda Center — Catch a Blazers game or one of the many concerts and major events that come through Portland.
  • Outdoor Concerts & Festivals — Summer in the Portland area means blankets, lawn chairs, food, friends and live music outdoors.
  • Waterfront Events — Portland’s waterfront comes alive with festivals, concerts and community events throughout the year.

SEASONAL FUN

Oregon knows how to celebrate the seasons. From fields of spring flowers and summer berry picking to pumpkin patches and sparkling holiday lights, some of the best local traditions only come around once a year.

  • Wooden Shoe Tulip Festival — Acres of colorful tulips with Mt. Hood in the background make this one of Oregon's most beautiful spring traditions. The farm's annual festival generally runs in March and April, with peak bloom varying with the weather.
  • Sauvie Island U-Pick Farms — Spend a summer day picking berries, flowers and seasonal produce at the farms around Sauvie Island. There are numerous U-pick farms to choose from throughout the growing season.
  • The Pumpkin Patch on Sauvie Island — Pumpkins, hayrides, a corn maze, farm animals and fall produce make this a classic Portland-area autumn tradition. The farm has been on Sauvie Island since 1967.
  • Fall Festivals, Farms & Local Events — Fall is one of my favorite times to explore Oregon. Pumpkin patches, harvest festivals, craft shows and local events pop up throughout the Portland area, making it the perfect excuse to grab a friend and make a day of it.

HOLIDAY LIGHTS & CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS

There is something special about Portland during the holidays. Neighborhoods light up, seasonal events fill the calendar and some of our favorite evenings are simply bundling up and heading out to enjoy the Christmas lights.

  • Peacock Lane — One of Portland’s classic holiday traditions, with homes along this Southeast Portland street covered in colorful lights and festive displays.
  • Holiday Lights & Seasonal Events — From neighborhood displays and Christmas markets to tree farms and seasonal celebrations, there are plenty of ways to enjoy the holidays around Portland.
